Broadband Router
A Broadband Router is needed to setup up Wireless Broadband or a wired home network. It is a piece of hardware that sits between the Internet and a device that wants to connect to the Internet. The Broadband Router allows multiple devices to simultaneously use the Internet at the same time. It connects the Internet through a Broadband Service provided by a Broadband ISP. Whether this be Mobile Broadband or a standard wired Broadband Service, the connection seen by the computer is just a connection to the Internet. The user doesn't have to worry about whether the Internet connection is through a wired or non-wired Broadband Service. The router can route information between connected devices via a wired connection or wireless connection to the router.
A Broadband Router serves the purpose of allowing access to the Internet to all devices connected in a secure manner. Security settings can be changed for a the Broadband Router such that private information is hidden and protected from others. There are many different types of routers, the main ones are ADSL Modem Routers for ADSL Broadband subscribers and Cable Routers for Cable Broadband subscribers. The basic function of routers is the same, but the way they connect to the Internet is different. ADSL Modem Routers connect to the Internet via an ordinary telephone line. Cable Routers connect to the Internet via a Cable Modem connected to a cable wall socket.
With current households having more than one computer on average, a router which supports broadband is needed so that everyone in the household can use the Internet at the same time.
