Broadband Satellite

Broadband Satellite is used for places that can't get access to the Internet any other way because they are in an area that is out of reach from Mobile Broadband or wired Broadband. What is needed in this case is a satellite that can access the Internet via a physical Satellite dish. These dishes are large and occupy a large amount of space. This is similar to that of a Broadband Service through an ADSL Service or Cable Service, except that a satellite is used instead of cables to access that Internet. ADSL Service users must be within 18000 feet from the phone center. Some Broadband ISP companies can provide an ADSL Service greater than this distance. Cable users don't cover some rural areas.

To access the Internet, data is transmitted from Satellites to a Satellite dish installed at the place of the user. Although speeds are slower than that provided by other Broadband Services, it is the only way the people living in rural areas to access the Internet. Prices are more expensive and the signal can sometimes be not that strong, especially during times of bad weather. There is a large latency or delay in the signal from the Internet to the Broadband Satellite user. This is due to the fact that each signal has to travel out to a Satellite in space back down to earth and to a Satellite Service Provider. The signal travels over thousands and thousands of kilometres end to end, causing large delays in the signal. Applications or Software such as Online games can be unplayable with this kind of setup.

There are not many users of Broadband Satellite but the technology is there and is used by those that need it.
